The lines that Joe uses to describe Joe reaching the summit show that Joe is searching for something inside of him that he has not yet found. This is shown when he illustrates his feelings of “what now” after he and Simon have achieved their goal of summiting Siula Grande. Even though Joe has reached the top of one of the tallest mountains in the world he seems to feel that there is something missing. Joe’s feelings of dissatisfaction can relate to the quote that T.E. Laurence has at the start of the book about “The Dreamers of the Day”. It shows that Joe is a dangerous type of person because he will push himself to great lengths to try and find satisfaction. The mentality Joe has could lead to finding himself in dangerous places or situations. This is because of his hunger to push himself in order to try and pursue his dreams of success.
