In chapter 8 of “Touching the Void” the use of tone is used in different passages. The chapter focusses entirely on Simon’s perspective and how he feels after cutting the rope and watching Joe fall. Simon is able to express his feelings to the reader by using tone and putting his feelings into words. The reader can identify with these feelings or express feelings of their own when they read through the chapter. The use of tone provides a more engaging experience for those reading the book and helps them feel more connected to the storyline. Simon uses tone towards the beginning of the chapter when he says: “I stared at the mountain rising over me. Empty. It was a pointless thing to have done – climb up it, across it, and down it. Stupid! It looked perfect; so clean and untouched, and we had changed nothing, It was beautiful, immaculate, but it left me empty. I had been on it too long, and it had taken everything.” This particular passage of the chapter highlights how Simon regrets climbing Siula Grande and also shows the feelings of emptiness that he is experiencing. The tone is created with the help of different language techniques that Simon uses. Simon uses repetition in the passage to give significance and importance to Siula Grande; the mountain he and Joe have been climbing on. Simon uses repetition throughout the passage by using “it” as an alternative use of saying Siula Grande. An example of this is when Simon says “… It was a pointless thing to have done – climb up it, across it, and down it.” The use of repetition in this specific part of the text helps to show Simon’s regret around climbing Siula Grande. After everything Simon has been through it becomes clear that he wishes he never set foot on the mountain in the first place. In this passage, Simon creates a heavy atmosphere or mood for the reader. Feelings of regret and fatigue help to create this atmosphere and the use of repetition strengthens this when the language technique is used.
